Analyzing A Picture

When analyzing a picture one can assume many things and can come up with a whole story line about what is going on in the picture and whats going to happen next. The Navajo picture analyzed in the book has a lot of depth and voice. The facial expressions and body languages speak so loud one can almost hear what is going on in the picture. It is hard for me to believe it was taken in 1963 and that society was still so divided. I hate seeing native Americans be disrespected, why couldnt those people just understand that they were here first. Images really envoke feelings like the feelings I felt. I disagree with the author of the essay because he says the little boy is smiling at the Indians but he is clearly not. He has almost the same look at his dad. He was probably confussed because the Navajo Indian world seems so different from his clean cut white world. Learning about the different Navajo dancers was interesting and sad at the same time. I think it is great they have different rituals and dances to keep them strong and following their beliefs. I also think it is sad that they must resort to entertaining tourists for money and are seen as different and a way of entertainment. They are people not some kind of weird species as the people in the picture look at them. I understand the Indians are the ones exposing themselves to the whites but it just seems so bizarre for some of the whites in the picture to be so disrespectful. I think the spacing in the picture really allows several things to be going on at the same time therefore creating a more complex story from one picture

The Language of Pictures

This article is about how pictures convey messages and their different purposes. It makes sense that the more important fiugres and objects will be given more light and attention in the picture and will have a background that will not overpower the main point. I agree with photographer Minor White when he said " I don't take pictures, I make them." I find myself doing the same thing. I always position objects and ask people to rearrange in certain ways in order for my pictures to come out the way I want them to. I think photographers hold such an important role in society and this article reminded me of it. Photographers sell things, report news and keep us updated, let us see things we wouldnt otherwise and make us aware of social issues. They really make a difference and influence society in huge ways. They persuade us and invite us to do things we would have not known exsisted. By reading this article I learned important aspects to understand pictures. These aspects are the space in a picture, the effect of the light, how the background contributes to the picture, and the relation between humans with nature and their opposites. This article has helped me to interpert pictures more and find more meaning and depth in them.
